Japan Posts Drop in Supermarket Rice Prices

(MENAFN) The average retail price of rice in Japanese supermarkets fell to 3,776 yen (approximately $25.60) per 5 kilograms in the week ending August 24, according to official government figures.

This marks a 28 yen decrease from the prior week and ends a three-week streak of rising prices, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) reported.

MAFF explained the price reduction was partly driven by increased sales of government stockpiled rice, which is distributed via discretionary contracts at reduced rates.

Drawing on data from roughly 1,000 supermarkets, the ministry noted that single-origin branded rice held steady, averaging 4,272 yen per 5 kg—a slight 4 yen increase from the previous week.

Conversely, blended rice varieties, which include the stockpiled rice, saw a 10 yen decline to an average of 3,159 yen per 5 kilograms.
