Media reports Trump ‘frustrated’ with EU, Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with Ukraine and the European Union over the lack of progress in ending the conflict with Russia, according to a report by The Atlantic.
Following recent meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Washington, Trump has been pushing for a lasting peace deal rather than a temporary ceasefire. His approach contrasts sharply with that of many Western European leaders, and he has called for direct talks between Putin and Zelensky.
However, sources close to the White House say Trump is now privately expressing disappointment that his diplomatic efforts have not yielded results. He reportedly blames Zelensky and the EU for making unrealistic demands, including reclaiming all occupied territories and joining NATO—goals Trump believes are unachievable.
“He just wants this over. It almost doesn’t matter how,” one senior official told the magazine, summarizing Trump’s desire for a swift resolution.
Trump has publicly stated that Ukraine regaining Crimea and entering NATO is “impossible” and has urged Zelensky to be more flexible in negotiations. In recent comments, Trump even threatened to impose economic penalties, including sanctions and tariffs, on both Russia and Ukraine if talks do not advance.
The Kremlin has consistently demanded that Ukraine remain neutral, stay out of military alliances, demilitarize, and recognize the territories of Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as part of Russia—regions that voted to join Russia in referendums held in 2014 and 2022.
While Putin has said he is not opposed to meeting Zelensky, he insists that significant progress must be made in negotiations beforehand. Russian officials have also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, pointing to his expired term and warning that any agreement he signs could be legally challenged later.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently reiterated that Kiev is not seeking peace but instead aims to strengthen anti-Russian military alliances to preserve what Moscow describes as a “neo-Nazi, Russophobic regime.”
