Ukraine Detains Suspect in Assassination of Ex-Parliament Speaker
(MENAFN) Ukrainian officials have detained a suspect connected to the assassination of ex-parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday.
Zelenskyy disclosed via X platform that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Security Service chief Vasyl Maliuk briefed him on the suspect's capture following Parubiy's slaying.
Ongoing investigative procedures continue as Zelenskyy demanded full transparency regarding case developments.
"All the circumstances of this horrendous murder must be clarified," Zelenskyy posted.
In additional remarks, Zelenskyy confirmed discussions with Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko concerning procedural measures involving the detained individual.
"The suspect has given an initial testimony," Zelenskyy revealed, emphasizing that intensive investigative efforts are actively pursuing comprehensive details surrounding the assassination.
Zelenskyy disclosed Saturday that Parubiy suffered fatal gunshot wounds in Lviv. Ukrainian media outlets indicated the victim sustained eight bullet wounds, resulting in immediate death.
Parubiy launched his political trajectory as a legislator before ascending to parliamentary speaker of the Verkhovna Rada between 2016-2019.
The deceased politician maintained active parliamentary duties representing the European Solidarity faction until his death, while simultaneously participating in the national security, defense and intelligence committee.
During February through August 2014, Parubiy occupied the secretary position within Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.
His career encompassed pivotal involvement in Euromaidan demonstrations alongside prominent governmental and security apparatus roles.
Parubiy affiliated with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's political organization, whom domestic media and analysts characterized as "Zelenskyy's main rival and opponent."
