Professor Tracy-Lynn Field is a distinguished legal scholar, educator, and advocate whose career has been dedicated to advancing climate justice, water governance, environmental governance, and human rights in Africa and beyond. With over twenty-five years of experience in teaching, research, and advocacy, she has emerged as a leading voice on climate change law, water equity, and the just energy transition.

Currently holding the Claude Leon Foundation Chair in Earth Justice and Stewardship at the University of the Witwatersrand, Professor Field directs research and public engagement that address urgent global challenges at the intersection of climate change, environmental degradation, and socio-economic inequality. Her scholarship includes the co-edited volumes Climate Litigation and Justice in Africa (2024), The Future of Just Transitions (2024), and Climate Change Law and Governance in South Africa (2016) all of which have positioned her as a central contributor to debates on climate litigation, energy justice, and sustainable development.

Since 1 August 2025 she was redeployed to the position of the Director of the Mandela Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her leadership extends beyond academia into policy and civil society. As Chair of the Board of the Centre for Environmental Rights (2017–2021), she played a critical role in strengthening litigation strategies, enhancing governance systems, and supporting biodiversity protection efforts. She also currently serves on the board of the Wildlife Society of South Africa. She has contributed expert evidence and legal insight to numerous organisations, including the Open Society Foundation, Natural Justice, the FILE Foundation, and the South African Water Research Commission.
