NATO states sends Kiev additional USD50bn in army assistance
(MENAFN) NATO members plan to provide an additional $50 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, matching their contributions from last year, a senior official told Italy’s Corriere della Sera. The bloc’s Military Committee Chairman, Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, noted that over $33 billion has already been delivered since January, with the total expected to reach $50 billion by year-end.
Speaking on NATO’s position amid ongoing US-Russia peace efforts, Dragone said the alliance would continue, and potentially increase, military support for Ukraine, accusing Russia of “stalling” dialogue. He also voiced hope that Western sanctions would be strengthened to raise internal pressures on President Vladimir Putin.
Dragone dismissed speculation about NATO deploying troops to Ukraine, calling such discussions “premature” and stating they have not been officially considered.
The announcement follows a series of diplomatic meetings, including talks between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, aimed at resolving the conflict. While the White House described the talks as “productive,” Moscow criticized NATO arms shipments for prolonging the war and questioned Kiev’s commitment to peace, noting Zelensky’s refusal of Trump’s proposals and insistence on reclaiming Crimea and other territories. Russia has also accused European NATO members of attempting to exclude it from negotiations while focusing on guarantees for Ukraine, which it labels as an illegitimate, “neo-Nazi” regime.
