“According to the survey, the majority of Germans oppose sending Bundeswehr soldiers to Ukraine. The Civey study, conducted for web, found that 51% of respondents were against Germany's participation in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Only 36% considered it appropriate, and 13% were undecided,” the report said.

The publication notes that in Germany, the far-right AfD party, The Left (Die Linke), and the far-left BSW have clearly voiced their opposition to deploying German troops to Ukraine. Some members of the CDU in eastern Germany also expressed critical views on the issue.

Meanwhile, German military expert Niko Lange called for a more objective discussion regarding the potential deployment of German troops to Ukraine. According to him, the term“ground forces” can sound sensational, frightening people, and provoking resistance.

“In the context of a possible military presence in Ukraine as part of security guarantees, this does not mean patrolling the line of contact or, as in the Cold War, standing face-to-face with Russians somewhere on the front line. Honestly, Ukrainians can defend their front line better than we can,” Lange said.

Lange believes that NATO troops will not be positioned on the front line in Ukraine but will instead be part of a broader system to ensure Ukraine's security against further Russian aggression.

As reported, planning teams from the Coalition of the Willing will meet with U.S. colleagues in the coming days to discuss providing Ukraine with reliable security guarantees and preparing for the deployment of deterrent forces in case hostilities cease.

About a dozen countries have expressed willingness to send troops to Ukraine as part of international security guarantees after the end of combat operations.
