Sinopec's“Clear Spring” CSR Project Brings Safe Drinking Water To Madhu And Its Pilgrims
For years, access to safe water remains a practical need during the pilgrimage, where many travelers spend long hours in warm conditions. The brand-new Water Purification Unit, which can filter up to 5,000 Liters per day, was welcomed by residents and pilgrims, who used it to refill bottles and canisters throughout the week. Groups of Pilgrims and families described the installation as a timely, useful addition that eases heat-related strain during peak footfall and will continue to serve the area after the festival.
Clear Spring focuses on dry-zone areas in the island, where groundwater can be hard to drink safely or scarce. The approach draws on evidence from Sri Lankan demonstrations of nanofiltration technology led by the China–Sri Lanka Water Center (an initiative of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). At Madu, the community-grade nanofiltration dispenser delivers up to 150,000 Liters a month of mineral-balanced drinking water. The unit uses multi-stage treatment, sediment and activated carbon pre-filtration, a nanofiltration membrane, and UV polishing to reduce turbidity, calcium content and heavy metals while preserving essential minerals.
Sinopec will map and prioritize additional high-need sites, particularly across the North Central and Eastern Provinces, for upcoming Clear Spring phases to strengthen community access to safe drinking water, guided by the project Motto,“Every drop counts; both Fuel and Water.”
The Sinopec Clear Spring project aligns with the Government's“Clean Sri Lanka” agenda and represents Sinopec's second public service effort under this program following the provision of clean, accessible washrooms at Sinopec Filling Stations across the island. The company will work with dealers and local authorities to identify additional high-need sites, track usage, and analyze outcomes.
