Sudan’s Health Ministry Reports New Cholera Cases

(MENAFN) Sudan's Health Ministry reported on Tuesday that there have been 1,575 additional cholera infections and 22 fatalities across the nation over the last seven days.

The announcement highlights the growing severity of the health emergency affecting communities throughout the country.

According to a formal statement from the ministry, the cumulative number of confirmed cholera cases has now risen to 101,450, with a total of 2,515 people losing their lives to the disease.

The outbreak has spread across all 18 states of Sudan since it was officially declared in August 2024.

This escalating public health disaster is unfolding as the nation grapples with a violent conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The armed confrontation, which began in April 2023, has led to the deaths of over 20,000 individuals and has forced 14 million people to flee their homes, as reported by the United Nations and local authorities.

However, independent research conducted by US universities suggests the actual death toll could be significantly higher, estimating it to be around 130,000.

The intertwining of a widespread epidemic with a devastating war has placed immense strain on Sudan’s healthcare infrastructure, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation.
