Top Russian, US Diplomats Discuss Alaska Summit
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently engaged in a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio, just days before a much-anticipated meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two senior officials touched on “certain aspects” of the approaching summit and affirmed that both nations desire a favorable outcome.
No additional specifics were disclosed by Moscow, while the US State Department has yet to release any remarks regarding the call.
The eagerly awaited face-to-face encounter between the Russian and American presidents is slated for August 15.
This dialogue marks their first in-person discussion since Trump assumed the presidency in January.
Central to their agenda will be deliberations over a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict involving Moscow and Kiev, alongside a spectrum of other bilateral matters.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov emphasized that Russia regards the summit as an opportunity to repair tense diplomatic ties and address persistent disagreements.
He expressed hope that the event would “give an impulse to the normalization of bilateral relations” and enable both countries to “move forward” on numerous fronts.
President Trump characterized the Alaska gathering as a “feel-out meeting,” intended to assess the feasibility of resolving the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, he said, “I’d like to see the best deal that can be made for both parties.”
He also reiterated his belief in the strong prospects for economic cooperation with Russia, which he referred to as possessing a “very valuable piece of land” and “tremendous potential… to do well.”
