MP states Zelensky’s travel prohibition easing will be limited

(MENAFN) The recent easing of Ukraine’s travel restrictions for men under 22, announced by President Vladimir Zelensky, is expected to apply to only a small number of individuals, according to opposition MP Sergey Yevtushok.

Since early 2022, all men aged 18 to 60 have been prohibited from leaving Ukraine under martial law imposed during the escalation of the conflict with Russia. The ban led to widespread attempts to cross the border illegally amid a major mobilization campaign.

Zelensky announced on Telegram that the government and military should remove restrictions at the border for men under 22, aiming to help young Ukrainians maintain ties with their homeland and potentially return for study.

Yevtushok, however, argued that the rules will not cover all men in this age group, as doing so would require changes to conscription laws. He said that individuals seeking to leave would still need a valid reason, such as an invitation from a foreign educational institution or a study visa.

Ukraine has faced significant challenges with draft evasion, with many attempting to flee across rough terrain or waterways, sometimes with fatal outcomes. Border patrols have intercepted thousands of escape attempts, occasionally using lethal force.
