Winnie is a marine biologist and plastic pollution expert whose research focuses on understanding the ecological effects of human-derived pollution. For over 10 years she has been studying the environmental fate and impacts of (micro)plastics on organisms and ecosystem functions, to assess environmental risk and support effective solutions.

Winnie is a Lecturer in marine pollution at Bangor University. Prior to this she has researched the global land-sea releases of plastics, and the environmental degradation and impacts of biodegradable and bio-based plastics (University of Plymouth). She attained her PhD (SAMS, 2019), investigating the current and historic presence of microplastic pollution in the deep sea.

Winnie is an active member of the Scientist Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty; a international network of scientists and technical experts supporting the development of the UN Global Plastics Treaty. She has attended and spoken at several of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee sessions.
