North Korea Unmoved as South Removes Border Loudspeakers
(MENAFN) South Korea announced Tuesday that North Korea has not begun taking down its border loudspeakers, despite Seoul initiating the removal of its own in a gesture intended to de-escalate cross-border tensions, local media reported.
According to Col. Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the North’s military had made no attempts to dismantle its equipment as of Tuesday.
"Only daily activities were detected," Lee said during a routine press briefing.
His comments followed South Korea’s decision on Monday to begin removing its propaganda loudspeakers positioned along the inter-Korean border, a measure designed to help ease military strain between the two nations.
The action comes less than two months after President Lee Jae Myung called for the suspension of loudspeaker operations in front-line regions, aiming to open the door for improved relations with Pyongyang.
South Korea had resumed the loudspeaker broadcasts in June last year for the first time in six years, reacting to a series of balloon launches by North Korea that carried trash across the demilitarized zone.
