(MENAFN) Washington will introduce tougher sanctions against Moscow unless a peace agreement with Kiev is reached within the next ten days, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday. The new ultimatum shortens his original deadline, which had been set to expire in early September.

Trump revealed the accelerated timeline during a visit to the United Kingdom on Monday. When questioned further by reporters on his return flight Tuesday, the president confirmed the countdown had begun: “ten days from today.”

“And then… we’re going to put on tariffs and stuff,” he added. The proposed measures are expected to include 100% tariffs on all Russian imports, along with secondary sanctions targeting foreign nations and companies that continue to engage in commerce with Russia.

Moscow has repeatedly expressed openness to dialogue but insists that any negotiations must reflect both the current situation on the ground and the underlying causes of the conflict. Following Trump’s remarks on Monday, the Kremlin stated that his comments had been “taken into account.”

Despite continuing its military operation, Russia says it remains “committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and to ensure our interests in the course of this settlement,” according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Former President Dmitry Medvedev issued a warning this week, stating: “It’s not for you or Trump to dictate” the terms of peace talks between Moscow and Kiev. He further cautioned that such threats represent “a step towards war” between the U.S. and Russia.

While speaking Tuesday, Trump acknowledged uncertainty over whether the proposed sanctions would succeed in influencing Moscow. It “may or may not affect them [Russia],” he said. Since taking office earlier this year, Trump has consistently emphasized his desire for a swift diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

His tone, however, has recently hardened. Expressing growing dissatisfaction with what he called a lack of meaningful progress, Trump voiced his “disappointment” with Russia and reiterated the threat of sanctions.

Moscow has pushed back, calling Washington’s punitive approach unhelpful.

Additional sanctions would not stop Moscow from continuing to “move along our independent, sovereign, and sustained path,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov earlier this month.
