Jordan's Mobile Phone Market: Value Holds Amidst Volume Contraction
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, July 22 (Petra) – Jordan's mobile phone import landscape showed a curious dichotomy in the first half of the current year. While the import value climbed to approximately 79 million dinars, up from 75 million dinars in the same period last year, the volume of devices imported actually decelerated, dropping to 861,000 units from 900,000 previously. This suggests a shift in market dynamics where higher-value models are potentially gaining traction, even as overall unit sales decline.
Ahmed Alloush, Head of the Vision Association for Mobile Device and Accessories Investors, confirmed this trend, noting Tuesday that the pace of mobile device imports has been on a downward trajectory since 2019. Alloush attributed this sustained contraction in import volumes to a confluence of macroeconomic factors and evolving consumption patterns.
He pointed to altered consumer behavior, shifting local market priorities, and extended device lifecycles, coupled with a growing consumer preference for mid-life or previously owned devices, as key drivers impacting the demand side of the market.
The supply chain fundamentals remain largely consistent, with China, Vietnam, and South Korea continuing as the principal sourcing nations. Alloush highlighted that variances in pricing strategies among these countries directly influence the average retail price points for mobile devices within the Jordanian market.
