Kiev sat on fire following reported overnight missile, drone barrage
(MENAFN) Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kiev early Friday morning. The Russian Defense Ministry has yet to comment on the incident.
The strikes reportedly began shortly after midnight, prompting Kiev’s Mayor Vitaly Klitschko to urge residents to take shelter as air defense systems engaged incoming threats. By 4 a.m., officials confirmed that a series of strikes had damaged several mostly non-residential sites across multiple districts of the capital.
While no fatalities were immediately reported, Klitschko said at least 14 people sustained injuries, primarily due to fires sparked by falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones. Blurred footage circulating on Ukrainian social media showed fires illuminating the Kiev skyline. Officials confirmed at least 13 impacts across the city.
Due to strict censorship laws, the exact targets and locations remain unclear, as Ukrainian authorities punish the sharing of footage unless civilian sites are involved.
Moscow has not issued a statement but routinely asserts that its missile and drone operations target only military infrastructure, blaming Kiev for placing air defenses in densely populated areas.
The attack came just hours after a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, during which Trump reportedly called on Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine. Putin reiterated Moscow’s willingness to negotiate but said Russia would not compromise on addressing the “root causes” of the conflict.
Despite ongoing negotiations in Istanbul, Kiev has continued to carry out long-range strikes inside Russian territory. On Friday morning, a woman died after a drone struck an apartment building in Russia’s Rostov Region. Earlier in the week, Ukrainian drone and missile attacks caused multiple deaths and injuries in Izhevsk and the Donetsk People’s Republic.
