Ukraine Temporarily Pulls Out from Ottawa Treaty
(MENAFN) Ukraine’s parliament has voted to temporarily halt the country’s involvement in the Ottawa Convention, the global treaty banning anti-personnel landmines, a lawmaker revealed Tuesday.
The suspension motion secured 299 votes in favor, surpassing the 226-vote threshold required, according to parliament member Yaroslav Zheleznyak’s Telegram announcement.
A state news outlet reported that the decision stems largely from “the asymmetric conditions,” noting that Russia remains outside the treaty. The suspension is set to remain in effect until the conflict fully ends.
Ukraine originally ratified the Ottawa Convention in 2005. Just last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky formally decreed the country’s withdrawal from the treaty.
