Russia Calls For Inclusive Political Structure In Afghanistan, Highlighting Ethnic Representation
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, at the conclusion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers' meeting in China, called for“national unity” in Afghanistan and the involvement of various ethnic and political groups in the country's power structure. Lavrov emphasized that nearly all members of the organization have strengthened their bilateral relations with the Taliban.
In a press briefing, Lavrov mentioned that the SCO countries agree on the need to create an Afghanistan free from terrorism and drug trafficking. He added that all member states emphasize the importance of assisting Afghanistan in its reconstruction and sustainable development, ensuring it remains an independent, neutral, peaceful country, free from terrorism and narcotics.
Lavrov reiterated the need for“ensuring ethnic and political inclusivity in the power structure,” a position Russia has advocated for since the Taliban's return to power. Russia has recognized the Taliban regime, yet has continuously called for a more inclusive government.
Following the Taliban's takeover, they sidelined political and social groups, appointing their own members to governmental positions. They accuse former government officials and former jihadist leaders of collaborating with foreign forces, despite the Taliban's claims of inclusivity.
Lavrov's statement highlights the importance of international cooperation to bring stability to Afghanistan and the wider region. Despite the Taliban's claims, many continue to question the true extent of political and ethnic inclusivity in the current Afghanistan government.
Lavrov stressed the necessity of ensuring ethnic and political participation in Afghanistan's government structure, addressing international concerns about the lack of inclusive representation in the Taliban-led“ethnic” government.
Since their return to power, the Taliban has faced criticism for their exclusionary policies, failing to include other ethnic and political groups in the governance of the country, leading to ongoing concerns over the country's political future.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), consisting of countries like China, Russia, India, and Central Asian nations, is working to play a more active role in regional issues, including Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for stability and cooperation.
