Ghana Scraps Fuel Allowances, Allocations for Political Appointees
(MENAFN) Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has taken a decisive step to curb government spending by eliminating fuel allowances and fuel allocations for political appointees, according to an official release issued Tuesday.
The statement emphasized the president’s stance that, in times of economic strain, those in leadership must also share in the sacrifices required. These actions form part of broader fiscal strategies aimed at cutting state expenditures and redirecting resources toward high-priority sectors.
Since assuming office in January, Mahama has actively pursued cost-reduction policies. One significant move includes capping the number of ministerial appointments at 60—roughly half the appointments made by his predecessor.
Ghana, a key exporter of cocoa, gold, and crude oil in West Africa, has been undergoing an intensive 36-month economic reform initiative launched in May 2023. Backed by a 3 billion U.S. dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the program seeks to tackle deep-rooted fiscal issues such as excessive budget deficits, rising national debt, volatile inflation, and currency instability.
