Trump says EU will pay for Patriot deliveries to Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has announced plans to supply Ukraine with additional Patriot air defense missiles, clarifying that the European Union will cover the costs. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Sunday, Trump said the decision comes in response to the ongoing conflict and Ukraine’s urgent need for protection against Russian strikes.
Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that although Putin “talks nicely,” he continues to launch attacks. While Trump did not specify whether the aid would include full Patriot systems or just the missiles, he acknowledged that Ukraine requires better defenses. He also mentioned that the exact number of Patriots to be sent has not yet been finalized.
“This isn’t costing us anything; the EU will be paying. For us, it’s business,” Trump stated, addressing recent reports of a possible new US military aid package for Ukraine that might include both defensive and offensive missiles.
Trump has recently sharpened his rhetoric toward Putin, blaming him for stalling US-led efforts to negotiate peace between Moscow and Kiev. He expressed frustration with Putin’s behavior, saying the Russian leader’s friendly tone is ultimately meaningless when it comes to achieving a ceasefire.
Russia maintains that its strikes target only military infrastructure in Ukraine and claims they are retaliatory responses to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, which Moscow says often hit civilian areas and key infrastructure.
