Amman, July 14 (Petra) – The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), Ziad Al-Saaida, affirmed on Monday that the commission maintained its regulatory and oversight role throughout 2024 over one of the kingdom's most vital and strategic sectors, in alignment with royal directives and the priorities of the Economic Modernization Vision. The commission, he said, continues to foster a regulatory environment that balances consumer protection with competitiveness and investment incentives.
In a press statement, Al-Saaida said that as part of its commitment to strengthening energy security and diversifying domestic sources, the EMRC facilitated the licensing of several key projects during the year. Among the most notable was the licensing of Jordan's first compression station for locally produced natural gas from the Risha field a strategic milestone that supports local production and enhances the competitiveness of the industrial sector within a national push toward efficient, safe, and sustainable energy sources.
In the electric transportation sector, the commission licensed around 200 electric vehicle charging stations across the kingdom. It also replaced more than 80% of traditional electricity meters with smart meters across all sectors, marking a major shift toward digital transformation. These changes have improved consumption efficiency and billing accuracy and reduced electricity losses, in line with Jordan's transition to a smart and sustainable power grid.
Regarding natural resources, Al-Saaida said the commission issued more than 4,900 import and export licenses for mineral raw materials in 2024 and conducted over 2,900 field inspections to safeguard the kingdom's mineral wealth from illegal exploitation and to enforce high-quality regulatory standards for extraction and trade.
In the field of radiation and nuclear safety, Jordan achieved a regional milestone by linking its fixed radiation monitoring stations to the International Radiation Monitoring Information System (IRMIS) operated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. This makes Jordan one of the first Arab countries to establish this connection, boosting national preparedness for radiological emergencies and enhancing international coordination.
Al-Saaida noted that the achievements of 2024 mark a qualitative leap in the level of service provided to licensees, investors, and citizens. These efforts have also entrenched principles of transparency and governance, culminating in the EMRC winning the King Abdullah II Award for Excellence in Government Performance and Transparency in the Infrastructure and Energy category a prestigious national recognition that reflects the competence of the commission's staff and its institutional distinction.
He reiterated the commission's commitment to sustaining an effective institutional approach that safeguards rights while promoting investment, all within a clear national vision toward a safe, sustainable, and highly efficient energy and minerals sector that serves the public interest.
