Brazilian President Condemns Multilateralism Breakdown
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva inaugurated the BRICS summit by sharply criticizing the current deterioration of multilateral cooperation amid ongoing global disputes.
Speaking to representatives of 11 emerging BRICS countries gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Lula emphasized the severe decline in international collaboration.
He stated, "we have witnessed an unparalleled collapse of multilateralism," marking this unsettling trend 80 years after fascism was defeated and the United Nations was established.
Lula cautioned that crucial "hard-won advances, such as climate and trade regimes, are under threat," signaling risks to global governance frameworks.
During his address, Lula vehemently condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza, calling on the international community to step in and stop what he described as an Israeli "genocide."
He stressed the importance of action against what he referred to as the "indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war."
Speaking to the assembled leaders from countries including China and India, Lula insisted that resolving the conflict "will only be possible with the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders."
Moreover, he "denounced violations of Iran's territorial integrity" and underscored the necessity of "deepening direct dialogue in Ukraine to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace."
Lula concluded by urging the BRICS nations to take a proactive role in fostering peace and facilitating diplomatic resolutions to international tensions.
