Washington: The death toll from the massive flooding that swept through the US state of Texas has risen to more than 80, amid fears that the number could rise as hopes fade for finding the 10 girls still missing.

In Kerr County, the hardest-hit by the floods, Sheriff Larry Lithia confirmed the death toll at 68, broken into 40 adults and 28 children.

Lithia explained during a press conference that approximately 750 girls were in a Christian summer camp located on the banks of the Guadalupe River. Ten of them are still missing, along with a coach who was present at the camp.

Authorities added that neighboring counties recorded 13 deaths, while two were recorded in Kendall County and one in Williamson County.

In his first comment on the disaster, US President Donald Trump announced that he would "probably" visit the affected area next Friday. He told reporters from New Jersey before boarding his flight back to Washington: "This is a disaster like we haven't seen in 100 years. It's horrific to see what's happening."

The flash floods were caused by extremely heavy rains that fell in the central state early last Friday morning, which coincided with the US Independence Day holiday, causing the Guadalupe River to rise eight meters in just 45 minutes.
