Beijing Sanctions Former Philippine Senator

(MENAFN) China has levied punitive measures against a former Philippine legislator, citing his "egregious conduct" on matters involving China, a spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry declared on Tuesday.

The restrictions will bar Francis Tolentino from setting foot in mainland China, as well as in the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao.

"For quite some time, driven by selfish interests, a handful of anti-China politicians in the Philippines have made malicious remarks and moves on issues related to China that are detrimental to China's interests and China-Philippines relations," the spokesperson stated.

The spokesperson emphasized that China remains "firmly" committed to safeguarding its sovereignty, national security, and progress-oriented priorities.

Tensions persist between China and the Philippines over several unresolved disputes, particularly concerning claims in the South China Sea.

Tolentino, aged 65, held office in the Philippine Senate from 2019 through 2025.

According to a news agency, there was no prompt response from the Philippine government following Beijing’s announcement.
