(MENAFN) LNG Canada officially launched operations on Monday by loading its inaugural shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a significant milestone as the nation’s first major LNG export terminal goes live.

Located in Kitimat, British Columbia, the new facility boasts an annual capacity of 14 million tons of LNG, with potential to double its output in the coming years, as revealed in a statement by LNG Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that the first LNG export to Asia signals a key step in diversifying Canada’s trade, enhancing energy exports to trusted global partners, and contributing to the reduction of worldwide emissions.

British Columbia Premier David Eby remarked, "At a time when the province's jobs are under attack," it's more important than ever that we get our resources to global markets and reduce our reliance on the United States."
