Türkiye Criticizes EU Summit Outcomes

(MENAFN) Türkiye asserted on Friday that the conclusions from the European Union (EU) leaders' summit reflect ongoing efforts by Greece and Southern Cyprus to assert their "maximalist claims."

"The results adopted at the European Union (EU) Leaders' Summit held on June 26, 2025, demonstrate that Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) continue their efforts to impose their maximalist claims, which are contrary to international law and the principle of equity, on the EU," Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli wrote on X.

The agreement signed in 2019 between Türkiye and Libya on defining maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean is a "completely legitimate agreement" under international standards, Keceli stated, emphasizing that Ankara will never accept the breach of its lawful rights and national interests.

He further criticized the EU for making "biased statements" on the matter of maritime boundaries—an issue involving both legal and technical considerations—arguing that such political stances do not contribute to harmony and security in the region.

"In this regard, instead of endorsing legally invalid claims, the EU should call on all its members to comply with international law," he said.

Keceli reaffirmed that Türkiye will steadfastly safeguard its legal entitlements and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean in accordance with international law.
