UN Cautions Against Heightened Conflict

(MENAFN) On Monday, the United Nations issued a warning against any further intensification of tensions in the Middle East, following accounts of Iranian attacks on a US airbase located in Qatar.

"I haven't seen the reports you mentioned. But, obviously, any increase in military activities or continued retaliation, as the secretary-general (Antonio Guterres) warned, just increases destabilization," stated UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric during a press briefing.

Dujarric further cautioned that the recent surge in hostilities "pushes us deeper into what he (Guterres) referred to yesterday as this rathole of retaliation."

When asked if UN staff stationed in Qatar had been instructed to relocate, he responded, "I have not heard of any movement."

These comments followed reports that Iran had declared the commencement of a military campaign targeting US installations in Qatar and Iraq.

Iranian news outlets reported that Tehran’s strikes began as part of Operation Bashayer Al-Fath, also known as Glad Tidings of Victory.
