Quality Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric Celebrates The HVAC Techs Who Keep Homes Comfortable
Cassie Pound said that HVAC technicians don't generally receive the appreciation they deserve, which may result in a continued shortage of skilled and trained HVAC techs.
"There is currently a shortage of about 110,000 techs nationwide, and that will continue to grow as more Baby Boomers retire," she said. "We need to start encouraging our young people to consider a career in the trades. Not only is it a lucrative career, but it is also recession resistant. Even during an economic downturn, people still need to have their air conditioning and heating repaired."
Quality President and co-owner Oscar Pound, who has served in the HVAC industry for more than 30 years, said that the industry is becoming more technical as more smart homes come online and as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires HVAC equipment to be more energy efficient.
"It's not the same industry as it was decades ago," he said. "If you like to work with your hands and enjoy learning how to use new technology, this is a great career opportunity. And, if you are concerned about the environment and clean air, then this profession has added bonuses since many of today's innovations in the industry are geared toward energy efficiency and making our indoor air quality (IAQ) better."
Oscar Pound said that HVAC technicians only need to attend trade school for about 18-24 months before they can start their career.
"Not only is it less expensive to go to trade school than most colleges and universities, you also have the chance to start earning a good living two years earlier than your college-bound friends," he said. "The other option is to find a good apprenticeship program with a qualified HVAC company, and you can start earning as you learn. Either way, the future is bright for HVAC techs."
