(MENAFN) The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have reached a tentative peace accord, marking a significant step forward before a comprehensive agreement expected next week, as highlighted in a joint announcement released by the US State Department.

This preliminary document was signed by technical delegations from both nations.

The event was overseen by Allison Hooker, the US Under Secretary for Political Affairs, as stated in the release on Wednesday.

A ministerial-level endorsement of the agreement is set to take place on June 27, and it will be witnessed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

According to the statement, this accord builds upon the "April 25 declaration of principles" and is the result of three days of “constructive” engagement focused on political, defense-related, and financial themes.

The deal includes mutual promises to uphold territorial sovereignty, stop confrontations, withdraw and disarm unauthorized militant factions, form a coordinated joint security framework, and support the repatriation of displaced individuals, unimpeded aid access, and regional trade cooperation.

As part of the continued US-Qatar collaboration in advancing peace in the region, Qatar participated in the talks to ensure their activities align.

Both Congo and Rwanda acknowledged and praised their combined involvement in fostering a peaceful solution.
