G7 Leaders avoid discussing Iran-Israel conflict

(MENAFN) During their summit in Canada, G7 leaders collectively urged a “de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” but notably stopped short of demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

The joint statement, signed by US President Donald Trump, emphasized Israel’s right to self-defense and labeled Iran a source of terror that should not acquire nuclear weapons. The call for broader regional calm was seen as a diplomatic compromise aimed at maintaining G7 unity while softening the overall message’s force.

Trump left the summit early, citing unspecified “big stuff” back in Washington and denying that his departure was linked to ceasefire talks, despite speculation. His press secretary confirmed the Middle East situation as the reason for his early exit. Trump also urged Iranians to “immediately evacuate Tehran,” which fueled rumors of possible US military involvement, though American officials denied any such plans.

Later, Trump criticized French President Emmanuel Macron on Truth Social, accusing him of “publicity seeking” and falsely suggesting Trump was engaged in ceasefire negotiations.
