G7 Leaders Call For De-Escalation Between Iran, Israeli Occupation

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, June 17 (KUNA) -- Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized countries have called for de-escalation and safeguarding stability in the Middle East in a joint statement issued following their meeting in Canada on Monday.
The G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in the region, stressing the importance of protecting civilians, and emphasized that the group remains clear in its position that "Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."
"We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza," the statement added.
The G7 also noted its readiness to coordinate efforts to preserve energy market stability, stating: "We will remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability."
Participants in the summit included US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
President Trump departed the summit one day before its conclusion, returning to Washington, and later stated that his early departure was unrelated to the ongoing ceasefire efforts between Iran and the Israeli occupation. (end)
