Russia’s negotiator highlights objective of discussions with Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia is seeking meaningful direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul to achieve a durable peace, according to Vladimir Medinsky, the head of Moscow’s delegation. Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Medinsky said the effort is a continuation of peace talks that were initiated in 2022 but halted by Kiev.
Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent call to resume negotiations, both sides have sent official delegations to Türkiye. Medinsky emphasized that Russia’s team is fully equipped with the expertise and authority needed to engage in productive talks. Alongside him are Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Defense Minister Aleksandr Fomin, military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov, and other senior military and diplomatic personnel.
Medinsky delivered a detailed statement, highlighting that Putin had convened a special strategy meeting the previous night. Attendees included key figures from Russia’s Security Council, armed forces leadership, and intelligence agencies, who provided updates on military operations and the state of the economy.
Based on these briefings, Putin gave clear directives and established Russia’s negotiating stance for the Istanbul talks. Medinsky confirmed that the Russian delegation will pursue a constructive approach, seeking common ground and practical outcomes.
“Our goal,” he stated, “is to address the core issues that caused the conflict and to establish a foundation for long-term peace.”
