Baghdad Launches Regional Initiative To Protect Tigris, Euphrates Rivers

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, May 24 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani announced, Saturday, the launch of a regional initiative aimed at protecting the Tigris and Euphrates rivers from environmental degradation.
The comprehensive strategy ensures the continuous flow of the rivers and serves as a platform to clarify roles, responsibilities, mutual benefits, and available cooperation opportunities.
Al-Sudani, speaking at the fifth Baghdad international water conference (BIWC), saying that the initiative relies on technical innovation and the application of science and technology to address climate change.
He highlighted that responsible partnerships at both national and international levels can pave the way for sustainable solutions and mitigate climate change impacts.
Recalling UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' statement during his Iraq visit, Al-Sudani stressed that the Tigris and Euphrates are a global concern, not merely a local issue.
The Prime Minister affirmed Iraq's commitment to overcoming obstacles toward achieving water security, developing resources to meet future needs, and fostering mutual interests and partnerships with regional countries.
The Tigris and Euphrates have faced significant supply reductions due to climate change effects and reduced releases from upstream countries, Iran and Syria. (end)
