Trump Addresses Difficult Relationship with Zelensky
(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump has shared his optimism that “something is going to happen” after his discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, he expressed uncertainty regarding whether Ukraine’s President, Vladimir Zelensky, is fully dedicated to bringing the conflict with Russia to an end.
Trump, who has previously noted that he finds it easier to engage with Moscow than with Kiev while attempting to mediate peace, reiterated this viewpoint on Monday.
When asked whether he believes Ukraine is “doing enough” to end the fighting, he responded cautiously.
“I’d rather tell you in about two weeks from now, because I can’t say yes or no… Look, Zelensky is a strong guy, and he’s not the easiest person to deal with. But I think that he wants to stop… I hope the answer is that he wants to get it solved,” Trump explained to reporters at the White House after speaking separately with both Putin and Zelensky earlier in the day.
Last week, Trump mentioned that “nothing is going to happen until Putin and I get together,” urging Kiev to “immediately” agree to Moscow’s proposal for direct negotiations.
When asked if his stance had changed following the Istanbul talks and his most recent calls, Trump maintained a cautiously hopeful outlook.
