Israel starts great land mission in Gaza
(MENAFN)
Israel has initiated a significant ground offensive in Gaza after a series of overnight airstrikes that killed over 100 people, as reported by local health officials. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the commencement of large-scale ground operations in both the northern and southern parts of Gaza, despite ongoing negotiations in Qatar for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office emphasized that any agreement must include the release of all hostages, the expulsion of Hamas from Gaza, and the complete disarmament of the territory. Negotiations between Qatar, Egypt, and the US have thus far failed to make progress since a two-month ceasefire collapsed in March.
The IDF has struck over 670 Hamas targets in the past week, while Gaza’s hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties from the airstrikes, many of them children. The latest operation, dubbed "Gideon’s Chariots," aims to secure strategic areas, dismantle Hamas' military infrastructure, and prevent the group from intercepting humanitarian aid.
The humanitarian situation has worsened, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting more than 3,000 deaths since March. UN officials have expressed alarm over the escalating violence, calling for an immediate ceasefire and warning of severe shortages of essential supplies. The current escalation began in October 2023 after a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel.
