US Seeks Control Over Russian Gas Pipeline Via Ukraine

(MENAFN) The U.S. administration under Leader Donald Trump is reportedly urging Kiev to allow Washington oversight of a gas pipeline that transports Russian natural gas to European Union nations, according to a report by Reuters.

This appeal is allegedly part of the concealed terms—referred to as “Easter eggs”—within the most recent version of a mineral resources agreement that the U.S. is encouraging Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s administration to approve, Reuters noted in an article released on Friday.

Referencing an insider familiar with the matter, Reuters reported that the proposed pact drafted by American officials contains a “demand that the US government’s International Development Finance Corporation take control of a natural gas pipeline from Russian energy giant Gazprom across Ukraine to Europe.”

Currently, no gas is flowing through the Gazprom-operated pipeline, as Ukraine has declined to extend its transit agreement with the Russian energy firm since the beginning of the year.
