Germany plans on targeting ‘internal EU enemies’

(MENAFN) Germany’s incoming coalition government intends to take a more assertive role in EU decision-making, including imposing penalties on member states that challenge the bloc’s foreign policies. According to Politico, the draft coalition agreement suggests that Germany will focus on countries like Hungary, which has opposed key EU actions, such as sanctions on Russia and policies related to the Ukraine conflict.

The new government, formed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democrats (SPD), aims to finalize agreements on key policy areas, including migration, climate change, and EU relations. CDU leader Friedrich Merz is expected to lead the coalition, which is set to take office before April 20.

A key part of Germany’s strategy involves strengthening its influence within the EU by using the "Weimar Triangle," a tripartite alliance with France and Poland. The coalition also plans to introduce punitive measures against member states that are seen as violating EU principles, such as rule of law. These measures could include withholding EU funds and suspending voting rights.

The coalition further proposes creating a “comprehensive sanction instrument” to counter dissent within the EU, which could replace the foreign policy unanimity requirement with majority voting. This would allow the EU to bypass countries like Hungary, which has exercised its veto power in opposition to certain sanctions and foreign policy initiatives.

Hungary has been a vocal critic of the EU’s stance on the Ukraine conflict and has argued that sanctions have harmed the EU economy. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also pursued independent peace initiatives and accused the EU of being “pro-war.”
