Putin suggests UN to temporarily govern Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed the idea of establishing a temporary UN-led government in Ukraine to oversee fair elections, as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky's term is set to expire in May 2024. Putin explained that Moscow sees no clear path to agreements with Kyiv since leadership could change at any time, and suggested that international practice, through UN peacekeeping activities, could provide a model for temporary administration.
The proposed governance would aim to organize elections and establish a legitimate government with the people's trust. Once a new government is in place, Putin suggested, it could begin negotiations with Moscow to sign a peace agreement that would be globally recognized and stable. While Putin emphasized that this is just one potential option, he reiterated Russia's commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully, provided it does not come at Russia’s expense.
In related developments, the US recently brokered a temporary ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, aimed at suspending attacks on energy infrastructure. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense has accused Ukraine of violating the agreement. Despite these violations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia would continue to honor the ceasefire, as it represents positive diplomatic engagement with the US.
