Moscow claims concert hall terrorist assault operated by ‘unfriendly country’
(MENAFN) The deadly terrorist attack at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall concert venue was planned by the intelligence services of an “unfriendly country,” Russia’s Investigative Committee stated on the anniversary of the tragedy.
On March 22, 2024, four gunmen stormed the venue before a rock concert, indiscriminately shooting attendees and setting the building on fire. The attack claimed 145 lives and injured more than 550 people. The terrorist group Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) took responsibility for the assault.
The attackers—citizens of Tajikistan—were apprehended while attempting to flee toward the Ukrainian border. Authorities have since arrested more than a dozen accomplices.
According to Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko, evidence confirms that the assault was orchestrated “to destabilize the situation in Russia” by a foreign intelligence agency. However, she did not specify which country was responsible.
Russia’s list of "unfriendly countries," first compiled in 2021 and expanded in 2022, includes 49 nations such as the US, UK, Canada, all EU members, Japan, and South Korea.
Petrenko added that six Central Asian nationals, currently abroad, were directly involved in planning the attack and have been placed on an international wanted list. These individuals recruited and trained the four gunmen in a foreign country.
Following the attack, Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Aleksandr Bortnikov suggested that the US, UK, or Ukraine could have played a role, stating, “We believe that this is the case.” He later warned that Western and Ukrainian intelligence agencies are expanding their network of operatives to carry out high-profile crimes within Russia.
