Serbia repeats its view on Russia sanctions

(MENAFN) Serbia has no intention of reversing its stance on sanctions against Russia, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin stated during a meeting in Moscow with Sergey Shoigu, secretary of Russia’s National Security Council. Belgrade has consistently refused to join the Western-imposed restrictions related to the Ukraine conflict.

Since 2014, the US and EU have introduced multiple rounds of sanctions targeting Russia’s defense, energy, banking, and trade sectors, initially in response to Crimea’s reunification with Russia following a Western-backed coup in Kiev. These measures were significantly expanded after the escalation of hostilities in February 2022.

“As you know, we have not joined the Western sanctions against Russia, and we will continue to follow this course,” Vulin emphasized on Saturday.

The extensive sanctions imposed by Washington and Brussels include bans on Russian seaborne oil shipments, exclusion from the Western financial system, and the freezing of Russian foreign reserves. Moscow has condemned these measures as “illegal” and warned that any seizure of its frozen assets would amount to “theft.” President Vladimir Putin has asserted that the restrictions have ultimately strengthened Russia’s economy by fostering self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on foreign technology.

Despite increasing pressure from the US and EU, Serbia has maintained a neutral stance on the conflict while preserving strong economic ties with Moscow.

During his meeting with Shoigu, Vulin also addressed Serbia’s recent vote at the UN, where it initially supported an anti-Russian resolution on Ukraine but later changed its position to ‘abstain.’ He acknowledged the mistake, stating, “It is much easier for us to admit a mistake than to offend our friends.”
