School commended for its exemplary commitment to KPSOM mission
PASADENA, Calif., March 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) has granted the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) Initial Accreditation following the medical school's completion of the institutional review process conducted under the WSCUC 2013 Standards of Accreditation.
As part of the accreditation process, WSCUC reviews a higher education institution's academic quality, educational effectiveness, institutional structures, processes, and resources. They assess how well the institution is achieving its stated educational objectives, with a strong emphasis on student learning outcomes and a commitment to continuous improvement, evaluating whether the institution meets their standards for quality education across all aspects of its operations.
"Achieving initial accreditation from the Commission is a tremendous milestone for the school. It marks not only the culmination of effort by many in our community to prepare for this stage in the process but also years of work to create the school envisioned by Kaiser Permanente leaders more than a decade ago," said John L. Dalrymple, MD, KPSOM Dean and CEO. "The Commission provided meaningful feedback during the process, illuminating the path to continuously evolve as an institution."
WSCUC commended KPSOM for its strengths including:
- Exemplary commitment to and alignment with the mission, vision, and values of KPSOM by the boards, school leadership, faculty, staff, and students.
- Ongoing commitment to an innovative curriculum that emphasizes equity, service-learning, scholarly projects, and population health with clear passion for these educational approaches demonstrated by leadership, faculty, staff and students along with a commitment to ongoing iterations based on feedback.
- Ongoing, institutionally initiated commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity (EID) that is central to its mission and inculcated throughout all parts of the organization, including strategic planning, admissions, curriculum, assessment, and program evaluation.
- Strong financial resources, especially the continuing commitment from KFH which are used to advance all aspects of the mission, including student support and faculty.
- Strong ethos of continuous quality improvement across the institution through systematic use of student learning and success assessment to optimize student achievement.
- Impressive student success outcomes with strong performance on national licensing exams and match rates.
The accreditation will be applied retroactively to May 13, 2024, and is awarded for a period of six years with the next reaffirmation review to be scheduled in 2030.
