India allows great arms, army equipment acquisition
(MENAFN) India's Defense Acquisition Council has granted preliminary approval for military procurements exceeding 540 billion rupees ($6.26 billion) to enhance the country's defense capabilities, officials announced on Thursday.
The planned acquisitions include upgraded engines for the Indian Army’s Russian-made T-90 battle tanks, additional anti-submarine torpedoes for the Navy, and advanced airborne early warning and control systems for the Air Force. The upgraded engines will improve the operational efficiency of India's T-90 tanks, which underwent a major overhaul in October 2024 to extend their service life by at least two decades.
Additionally, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an $823 million deal to procure 307 domestically developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), according to local reports. The 155mm howitzers, developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), will be manufactured by Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). Bharat Forge, as the lowest bidder, will produce 60% of the guns, while TASL will manufacture the remaining 40%.
The ATAGS are set to replace older 105mm and 130mm artillery, significantly strengthening India's defense capabilities along its borders with China and Pakistan. A defense official noted that over 65% of the gun’s components, including key subsystems, are sourced domestically. The Indian Army plans to deploy 1,580 ATAGS units with a range of up to 48 kilometers (27.3 miles). Modified versions, known as Mounted Gun Systems, are expected to complete trials by 2026, with export orders already secured.
Beyond the artillery upgrade, the Indian Army is also expanding its Pinaka rocket system fleet, increasing from four regiments to a planned 22 in the future.
