Turkish opposition politicians fight with law enforcement
(MENAFN) Supporters of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu clashed with police inside a courthouse on Sunday, as opposition lawmakers from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) attempted to break through security barriers.
During the confrontation, CHP MP Cemal Enginyurt criticized the barricades, arguing that authorities were blocking lawmakers from meeting Imamoglu. The mayor, currently facing corruption and terrorism charges, was brought before a judge who is set to rule on his potential arrest.
The CHP has called for mass protests in defiance of Istanbul’s rally ban, leading to large demonstrations in Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities. Authorities responded with tear gas and water cannons, detaining around 320 protesters on Friday and 56 individuals accused of making "provocative" social media posts.
Imamoglu, who previously ran as a vice-presidential candidate in 2023, was detained on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege he accepted bribes and collaborated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Imamoglu, however, denies all charges, calling them politically motivated.
