Boxing legend passes away at age 76

(MENAFN) Two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman has died at the age of 76, his family announced on Instagram on Saturday. Known as ‘Big George’, Foreman had a legendary career in boxing, retiring with 76 wins (68 by knockout) and only five losses.

“With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr, who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones,” his family stated.

Foreman’s career began in amateur boxing before he won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City at just 19 years old. Five years later, he claimed his first world heavyweight title. In 1994, at age 45, he won the championship again, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in history.

One of his most famous fights was the 1974 ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ against Muhammad Ali, where he suffered an eighth-round knockout loss. The fight was later featured in the Oscar-winning documentary When We Were Kings.

After retiring in 1977 to become an ordained minister in Texas, Foreman made an unexpected comeback in 1987 at age 38. His final fight was in November 1997, a controversial majority decision loss to Shannon Briggs.

Outside the ring, Foreman became a successful entrepreneur. In 1994, he launched the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide. He later sold the commercial rights for $138 million in 1999.

Foreman was also a longtime HBO ringside analyst and was recognized as one of The Ring magazine’s 25 greatest fighters of the past 80 years and the ninth-greatest puncher of all time.

His legacy as both a fighter and businessman remains unmatched in the world of sports.
