UNICEF cautions of unprecedented mental Health crisis among Palestinian children in Gaza
(MENAFN) On Friday, UNICEF shed light on the severe mental health crisis the Palestinian children in Gaza are experiencing, describing it as unprecedented in modern history.
James Elder, UNICEF's representative, stated during a UN meeting in Geneva, "We don't have an example in modern history in terms of an entire child population needing mental health support." He added, "We are losing a generation in terms of education and in terms of a mental health crisis that we've not seen before."
Elder further noted that children’s rights in Gaza have been “ignored and denied by choice” and urged those in positions of power to take action.
Since the beginning of March, 180,000 doses of essential vaccines and incubators for premature infants have been blocked at the border due to Israel ceasing flow of humanitarian aid. Elder stressed that "protecting children, getting aid to children is not optional, it's law."
As of Tuesday, over 700 Palestinians have been killed and more than 900 injured in Israeli airstrikes, which broke a ceasefire and inmate swap deal that had lasted since January.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military actions have resulted in roughly 50,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children, and more than 112,000 injuries.
