Former UFC Champion Intends to Run for Irish Presidency
(MENAFN) Mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation and previous UFC champion Conor McGregor has revealed his decision to run for the presidency of Ireland.
In his announcement, McGregor emphasized his opposition to the EU Migration Pact and promised to challenge the government’s position on the matter.
He also expressed his support for a public referendum regarding the matter.
McGregor shared his views on Instagram, stating his disagreement with the migration deal, which Ireland is required to fully adopt by June 12, 2026.
He criticized Irish government officials for backing the agreement and promised to ensure that the Irish people would have the ultimate say in the decision.
“Who else will stand up to Government and oppose this bill? Any other Presidential candidate they attempt to put forward will be of no resistance to them. I will!” McGregor declared.
He further explained, “For clarity also, as President, I would put forth this bill to referendum.”
McGregor also made it clear that although he strongly opposes the pact, he believes the choice should not be made by the government alone. “It is the people of Ireland’s choice! Always! That is a true democracy!” he emphasized.
Furthermore, McGregor questioned the fervent support government officials have shown for the migration pact, urging for open debates and ultimately a public vote to determine the future of the agreement.
