Alliance Fleuve Congo Declares Withdrawal from Walikale
(MENAFN) The Alliance Fleuve Congo, a coalition of rebels including the M23 faction, declared on Saturday that it was pulling back from Walikale and its surrounding areas in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision came just days after they had seized control of the mineral-rich region.
The withdrawal was in accordance with a unilateral ceasefire that was announced on February 22. The group's objective was to establish an environment conducive to political dialogue aimed at resolving the ongoing war in the region. Lawrence Kanyuka, the representative for the group, issued a statement on the platform X, explaining the decision.
“To support peace initiatives aimed at fostering conditions conducive to political dialogue addressing the root causes of the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Alliance Fleuve Congo has decided to reposition its forces from the town of Walikale and its surrounding areas,” the statement read.
The rebel group also urged "residents of Walikale and their community leaders to take necessary measures to ensure security and protection of the civilian population and their property during this transition period."
Despite the announcement, local residents reported that some rebel members were still present in the city by Saturday afternoon. Additionally, local media indicated that Congolese military airstrikes were heard near the town's Kigoma airfield later that day.
