Reports reveal decline in EU Asylum applications in 2024

(MENAFN) According to the EU's statistical agency, Eurostat, there was a 13% decrease in asylum applications across the 27-member European Union in 2024, with the total number reaching 912,000.

In the previous year, individuals from Syria submitted the highest number of initial asylum requests, totaling 148,000, which constituted 16% of all applications. Following Syria, Venezuela accounted for 72,800 applications (8%), and Afghanistan ranked third with 72,200 applications (8%).

Since 2013, Syria has been the primary nationality of individuals seeking asylum in the European Union. In December of last year, the long-standing Assad regime was overthrown, concluding the country's 14-year civil war, which had resulted in a significant outflow of refugees to neighboring nations further afield.

Germany remained the primary destination within the EU for asylum seekers, registering 229,700 first-time applications, representing a quarter of the EU's total.

Other leading recipient countries included Spain (164,000, 18%), Italy (151,100, 17%), France (130,900, 14%), as well as Greece (69,000, 8%). Collectively, these five nations accounted for 82% of all first-time asylum applications within the EU in 2023.
