(MENAFN) Amid ongoing conflict and a deteriorating crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Canada has pledged over $99 million in funding, underscoring its steadfast commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in the region. This substantial financial assistance aims to address the pressing needs arising from the escalating situation.

Global Affairs Canada stated: "Today, the Honorable Melanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, announced more than $99 million in funding to support the UN, World Bank, Red Cross and NGO partners in delivering international assistance to Gaza and the West Bank."

The aid package, allocating $20 million, focuses on restoring essential health services and assisting vulnerable communities.

A total of $24.55 million is designated for crucial assistance, including food, protection, and shelter for those in need. An additional $24.75 million is earmarked for peace and security efforts, such as mine clearance activities. Moreover, $30 million is set aside to foster economic recovery and enhance governance in the occupied West Bank.

The statement declared: "The current humanitarian situation is not sustainable," emphasizing that "Canada reiterates its call to allow the free flow of humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians in need."

The statement also underscored the critical importance of upholding international humanitarian law "including the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers."
