Amman, Mar. 21 (Petra)-- On the sidelines of his involvement in the PACE meeting, which got underway yesterday, Thursday, in Strasbourg, France, Senate Speaker Faisal Al-Fayez met with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Theodoros Rousopoulos.
According to a Senate statement, the discussion covered a range of conference subjects pertaining to public freedoms and democratic growth, as well as the necessity of coordinated international legislative efforts to advance and deepen these freedoms and put the legal frameworks that safeguard them into effect.
The current state of affairs in the Middle East and Israel's actions against the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank were also discussed. His Majesty King Abdullah II's attempts to stop Israeli aggression and his continuous efforts to bring about a fair and comprehensive peace in the area so that its citizens can live in security and stability were also discussed.
The fierce Israeli war on the Gaza Strip was the most recent of several political and security crises that have affected the lives, safety, and stability of people in the Middle East, according to Al-Fayez.
He clarified that by all standards, Israel's activities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including its ethnic cleansing, war crimes, extermination campaign, destruction of Palestinian livelihoods, and use of all possible methods to forcibly relocate Palestinians, are wrong. Israel, the occupying state, has transgressed all legal requirements as well as ethical and humanitarian principles.
The international community must acknowledge that Israel is the main cause of the chaos and devastation engulfing the Middle East. Israel rejects international resolutions pertaining to the Palestinian cause and all laws that defend public freedoms, peoples' rights, and the preservation of their dignity.
He emphasized that all parliaments and the international world must recognize the Palestinian state, and that it is intolerable that there is still no political plan to end Israel's nearly 80-year-old occupation of Palestine. Security cannot be enjoyed by Israel until the Palestinians are granted their just claim to the establishment of an independent, functioning state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
According to Al-Fayez, Jordan is always working to bring about a fair and complete peace in the Middle East because it believes that people will never be able to live in security and stability in the midst of the wars and tensions that have worn them out and left hundreds of thousands dead, displaced, and refugees.
On the other hand, while attending the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly conference, Al-Fayez had a meeting with Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament.
The meeting covered the current state of affairs in the region, the most recent events on the global stage, especially those pertaining to the Russian-Ukrainian war and Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, as well as Jordanian-Ukrainian relations and ways to improve them in a number of areas.
Al-Fayez emphasized Jordan's steadfast and uncompromising stances, which demand that disputes be settled amicably and through conversation, as well as the requirement that all sides follow resolutions of international validity within the framework of conflict resolution.
Relatedly, the Senate President met with Louis Herner, the French Senate's vice president, and spoke with him about the significance of enhancing Jordanian-French ties in a number of parliamentary, political, and economic spheres.
The French-Jordanian Parliamentary Friendship Committee, which is scheduled to visit the Senate next month as part of an initiative to improve ties between the two friendly nations, was welcomed by Al-Fayez. He underlined how important it is for the friendship committees in both houses to enhance and expand Jordanian-French ties in a number of areas.
