Meningitis epidemic worsens in Kebbi, Nigeria

(MENAFN) health authorities reported on Wednesday that the death toll from a Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) epidemic in four local government zones of Kebbi, a northwestern state in Nigeria, has increased from 26 to 56.

Musa Ismaila, Kebbi's health commissioner, shared from the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, that the total of suspected cases has escalated sharply, growing from 248 to 653 within the span of just one week. Since being declared in late January, the outbreak has grown progressively worse, with a notable increase in suspected cases over the past two weeks, he added.

""The public health department started receiving reports of people with symptoms of fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and associated vomiting and dizziness, which in some of the cases resulted in deaths," Ismaila stated.

In an effort to curb the spread of the outbreak, the state government has proactively supplied medications and essential resources, to the affected local government spots and surrounding communities. These measures are part of a broader strategy to contain the crisis, as health authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement urgent interventions.
